Pronunciation of Spanish Vowels

When pronouncing vowels, Spanish language styles are generally pretty easy for people who speak English to learn. How to pronounce vowels in Spanish is key to becoming competent in pronouncing the Spanish language. Some vowels only have one way that they can sound others have more. For all Spanish vowels, the pronunciation is slightly different to how they would be pronounced in English.

The basics of pronouncing Spanish vowels begins with the letter A.

  • A is pronounced in Spanish in three different ways dependent upon the word in which it is being used the three different ways to pronounce A in Spanish. The following are the examples: it can be pronounced like the O in ‘loft’, the A in ‘father’ or the A in ‘mat’.
  • E is pronounced usually like the E in ‘met’ it can also sound like the E in the word ‘café’.
  • I am pronounced similarly to the E in ‘me’ but is a little shorter and sharper.
  • O is pronounced in a similar way to the ‘oa’ in the word ‘boat’ but is a little shorter.
  • U is pronounced in the same way as ‘oo’ in ‘loot’ or can sound like the ‘u’ in ‘tune’.

Keep in mind that these are only the sounds for single vowels. Similar to in English, the Spanish language sometimes more than one vowel can be used together in a word to form a different vowel sound. For an example, if the letter ‘u’ is followed by another vowel, the resulting sound is similar to the ‘w’ in water. The combination of the vowels ‘a’ and ‘I’ together make a sound like the English word eye. The letter ‘I’ when followed by an ‘a’, ‘u’ or an ‘e’ sounds like the ‘y’ in the word yell.

The letter ‘y’, which is similar to a vowel, is normally used in the same way as the letter ‘I’ when used in Spanish words. If it is however used in a word that has been derived from a word in the English language, it is used in the same fashion that it would be in an English word.

When learning Spanish, pronouncing Spanish vowels is probably the easiest part of the process. During the process of learning about Spanish pronunciation, vowels are the best place to begin.
